Frequent Asked Questions: Library Cards & Borrowing

How can I get a library card?

Do I need a library card to use the computers?

When can my child get a library card?

I lost my library card. Is there a fee to replace it?

Are there computer records of everything I've ever checked out of the library?

Are there any paper records other than the library card application that include any of my personal information?

  • How can I get a library card?
Stop in to the library and fill out an application. You must be able to provide proof of a local mailing address.

Proof of a local mailing address can be:

      • a driver's license

      • a bill or contract showing a local mailing address

      • a piece of cancelled mail

Your card will be issued and your account will become active for use immediately. If you cannot provide one of the above items to prove you have a local mailing address, a library card will be mailed to your local address and you may use it when you receive it.

If you do not meet the above mailing address requirements, there is the option of a deposit account. The library will hold a $50.00 deposit until you either obtain proof of a local mailing address or you move out of the area. If your library account is clear at that time, the deposit will be returned to you.

  • Do I need a library card to use the computers?
A library card is not necessary to use a computer.

  • When can my child get a library card?
Children can be issued library application forms when they enter the first grade. These forms must be signed by a parent or guardian before children can check out library materials. The actual library cards are not given to children until they enter high school and can be responsible for carrying it; children who have not been issued a card may simply tell us their name when they check out.

Children under the age of 18 are required to have parental permission to check out adult music and book CDs, books-on-tape and R-rated movies. Children may check out "Juvenile" books-on-tape.

  • I lost my library card. Is there a fee to replace it?
There is not a charge to place a lost library card.

  • Are there computer records of everything I've ever checked out of the library?
In order to protect as much of your privacy as possible, our computers only save records of what library items are currently checked out to you. Our computer system no longer has a record of items you have checked out once they are checked in. Please call us at (307) 367-4114, stop by, or contact us via email if you have further questions or concerns.

  • Are there any paper records other than the library card application that include any of my personal information?
The only paper records we keep are the information you provided on your library card application or library deposit account application (i.e. your contact information). If you have overdue items, an overdue notice is generated and sent to your mailing address immediately. Any overdue notices generated but not sent are shredded. Please call us at (307) 367-4114, stop by, or contact us via email if you have further questions or concerns.
